2002 Tacoma, double cab, 4x4, TRD Off-road. I’ve done a lot of work to my truck over the past two years to turn it into the capable and reliable rig it is today.
Mechanical: Timing belt and water pump, A/C compressor, evaporator and condenser, lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rods, front brake pads and rotors, rear differential actuator, shocks and coil-overs, valve cover gaskets, all vacuum hoses, gas filler neck, heavy duty leaf springs, tires less than 5k miles ago, all fluids changed (front and rear differential, transfer case, brake fluid and coolant), upper and lower radiator hoses, spark plugs and wires. I went through and replaced anything I thought would make the truck more reliable. The engine doesn’t leak or consume any oil. I’ve put on 29,000 miles in the past two years.
Cosmetic: This truck is far from perfect. I focused on mechanical and when it came to cosmetics I was practical. The windshield gasket was dry rotted so I sealed with black sealant. Doesn’t look great but zero leaks. Some minor damage to the front passenger fender and hood from the prior owner. Two spots of rust on the rockers. Spot of rust on the rear tailgate. Truck got a new frame in 2015 but other components on the underside are crusty.
I’ve taken this truck all over out west, with extensive trips through Death Valley, the Sierras and Moab. It’s close to a stock truck, which helps maintain fuel economy and reliability.
I built out a nice set of storage compartments in the rear with a diesel heater, fridge, eco Flo power unit and 200 watts of solar.
I just changed the oil and air filter and greased the driveline and front end. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive this truck anywhere. I’ve owned lots of different Toyota 4x4s and this one is my favorite. No traction control, is the perfect size and is mighty capable.
